so for xmas, alli gave me exactly what i wanted : gerbing heated gloves so my fingers will no longer freeze when riding the motorbike. they are awesome...except they run a bit hot. so gerbing makes a variable controller for $70US. that.s not a lot, but i also know that it.s less than $5US in parts. so i did a little research, breadboarded a homebrew pwm controller, then protoboarded it, and finally fabricated a proper pc board and case for it. but i misjudged a couple of components, so i need to replace the bipolar transistor with a mosfet. i.ll also be swapping the shiatty homemade power cords with a hacked-up gerbing cord i picked-up for $5US + $5US shipping [a scam, i tell you]. in any case, i should be done with it this weekend. imay post a full write-up then, complete with schematics, and photos if i get around to it.
since i.m losing my home office to...well, i.m being displaced shortly. so my initial idea was to buy a new laptop to replace my old one, use the old one for my development machine, and the new one for music production. but after rethinking the financial impact of that [wasteful] decision, i opted for an alternative plan. i bought a new hdd and ram for the old one. so now, i.ve got a 320gb 7200 rpm drive to replace the old 60gb 7200 rpm drive. i used an incredibly awesome [free, no less] app called clonezilla. i highly recommend it if you want to upgrade hard drives without having to reinstall windows [or linux, or osx, etc].
it.s gonna be a strange year...
